Parking and transport

When it comes to parking and transportation for the hike between Østerbø and Vassbygdi, you have a couple of choices. Since the hike is not a loop trail, you'll need to arrange transport by car for one of the ways between Østerbø and Vassbygdi. 

  • The first option is to leave your car at Østerbø. We offer free parking, even if you have already checked out. After completing the hike from Østerbø to Vassbygdi, you can take the bus back to Østerbø. Please be aware that some bus options may require advance booking.

  • For a more flexible approach, you can drive your car down to Vassbygdi in the morning, take the bus back to Østerbø, and then your car will be waiting for you at the end of the hike. This way, you won't be tied to a specific bus schedule after finishing the hike.

  • Another option is to take the bus down to Vassbygdi in the morning and then hike back up to Østerbø.

There are two different parking spots in Vassbygdi, but we recommend the one at Vassbygdi servicebygg since this is where the trail concludes. Here, you can also treat yourself to a cup of coffee, a waffle, or an ice cream after finishing the hike (during the peak season).

Road Work in the Vassbygdi Tunnel

In the Vassbygdi Tunnel, roadwork is ongoing, and the road will be closed between 18:00 and 06:00 every day. There will be convoys departing from the Aurland side at 19:00, 20:00, 21:45, and 23:00, with return convoys from the Vassbygdi side immediately after. During odd-numbered weeks, the tunnel will be open for free passage from Friday at 06am until Sunday at 6pm. Travelers coming from Ål/Hol will not be affected.

Østerbø Fjellstove Minibus – for overnight guests only and only prebooking 160,- per person

Timetable:

From Østerbø to Vassbygdi 08:30 - for those who want to hike up

From Vassbygdi to Østerbø 16:30 (extra 15:30 if the 16:30 is full booked)

Transportation between Geiteryggen, Steinbergdalen, and Østerbø can be booked in the days the local bus 850 don’t go.

Route Bus 850
This route operates from June 21st through August, plus two weekends in September.

  • Price: NOK 49 per person

Norway's Best Bus
Runs between Flåm and Østerbø Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays in September, and the first two weekends of October.
Note: Pre booking is required to guarantee a seat! Departure times may vary!

  • Departure from Vassbygdi to Østerbø: 09:00 and 15:40

  • Departure from Østerbø to Vassbygdi: 10:00 and 16:30

  • Price: Adults NOK 160, Children NOK 105

Flåm Travel – Additional Route
From June 21, 2025, Flåm Travel operates an extra route from Vassbygdi to Aurland and Flåm. These times correspond with train departures from Flåm to Oslo and Bergen. In addition, they run an extra route in Aurlandsdalen from September 1 to October 5

  • From Vassbygdi: 15:40 and 16:55

  • From Aurland: 15:55 and 17:10

  • Arrival in Flåm: 16:10 and 17:25

Connects with trains from Flåm to Myrdal at 16:15 and 17:30.
